Mona Keddy is a joyful and inspiring teacher widely appreciated for generously sharing yoga’s life-transforming benefits with her students.
Known for her joyful presence and unwavering commitment to her students’ transformation, Mona’s teaching balances serious intention with a light-hearted approach, challenging her students to grow in a supportive and welcoming atmosphere. The design of her classes demonstrates a deep level of respect and love for all poses in the sequence, from the basic to the more advanced. With a precise yet playful teaching style, Mona skilfully integrates the needs of each student while guiding the group to learn and thrive collectively.
Mona’s first experience with yoga came fifteen years ago while she was living in a small town in northern British Columbia. Having never practiced it before, she didn’t know what to expect. During her very first session, Mona immediately recognized how this gentle yet powerful discipline allowed her to connect with her self in a way that she had not previously experienced. This was a major turning point in her life — before the end of that first class Mona knew she was meant to follow the path of yoga. She had glimpsed a valuable understanding that yoga inspires insight, facilitates transformation and strengthens the connection to self, an awareness that continues to elevate her own practice — and teaching — to this day.
Quickly immersing herself in the study of yoga, both as physical asana practice and as philosophy, Mona naturally and selflessly turned towards teaching to help others discover the wide-ranging benefits of yoga. To this end, she studied in several different styles, including Ashtanga vinyasa, vinyasa flow, Iyengar and Anusara yoga. She was led in these studies by some of North America’s senior teachers, including Erich Schiffmann and Shirley Daventry French, as well as the Iyengar family in India. She eventually concentrated her studies in Iyengar and Anusara yoga, achieving certification in both methods.
As Mona’s teaching and practice evolved, she was increasingly drawn to strengthening her connection to yoga’s spiritual core. The desire to integrate a heart-centred philosophy with a precise alignment technique has been integral to her teaching over the past several years. In addition, Mona brings a keen interpersonal intelligence to each class she teaches — an extensive background in psychotherapy and adult education allows her to connect with her students on an emotional level and move them deeper into understanding and shaping their internal landscape.
In the spring of 2011, Mona opened Montreal’s Shri Yoga Studio with co-founder Barrie Risman. As one of the most respected teachers in the Montreal yoga community, Mona regularly teaches workshops throughout Canada and Mexico, successfully guiding new and long-time students in deeper discovery through daily asana, pranayama and meditation practices. With the knowledge that our personal relationship to the practice of yoga greatly affects our relationships in everyday life, Mona masterfully encourages her students to reach their highest potential.
